So now that Val and I have our studio up and running I've been trying to think of ways to use the space for things other than meeting with clients, shooting, and production. I wanted to toss this idea out there to see if there was any interest. If there is maybe I'll try to get the ball rolling.
I have basically no formal training in photography, but during the single fine art photo class I did take during college there was one part that I especially found very valuable - the group critiques. So I was wondering if there would be any interest if I hosted a group critique at our studio (or other locations too) on a monthly or occasional basis. It could be a little like photo pot luck - bring a photo to pass - either a print to hang or a file to show on the plasma. We'd offer constructive critiques on each others images, probably munch some food, talk shop, etc.
Anyone interested? I'm open to refinements of the idea too.

Hi Dave! I think this would be a great idea! I feel, speaking for myself, that this would be very beneficial feedback and a great way to learn and grow.

Count me in! I totally agree that is one of the biggest things I miss from school is being in a room full of photographers to get feedback from. Just let me know the time and place with a little notice please

I think this is a great idea, easy to setup, and small enough to allow it to be more casual and less stress for whomever is hosting the session.
Great idea Dave...

Okay, so here are the details about the critique. If anyone has any questions or suggestions, please let me know - dave@narella-studio.com Thanks!
WPPF Group Critique Guidlines
Purpose
The purpose of the critique is to create a learning experience for all those involved. It’s not a competition and we’re not interested in seeing who brings the best image. No matter what your skill level, we’re all students of photography and can learn much by getting feedback and insight from our peers. Participating in a critique can be a valuable experience, but a thick skin is necessary.
Requirements
Each participant must bring and image to pass. A minimum of one image is required to attend. Images will be accepted in either print or digital form according to the guidelines below. Participants must take ownership of their images, no anonymous submissions will be allowed.
Digital Submissions Digital images must be full resolution JPEG files submitted either by email or in person the day of the critique. If you are submitting images the day of, please arrive at least 30 ahead of time to allow time for downloading and for adjusting the image for the plasma display.
Files will not be returned and will be deleted after the critique.
Print Submissions Prints must be at least 16x20 in size to make it easy for everyone to view.
Prints do not need to be mounted. There will be way to display loose prints that will not damage them.

Will submitted images be posted on the forum for everyone to see, and discuss? or can this be optional for entrants?

I'm not planning on automatically posting them, but people can certainly submit them on their own.

Is there going to be a topic or theme to follow or just a photo we would like critique on? I've not been to something like this before so not exactly sure what type of images would be worthwile to submit or how many?

Is there going to be a topic or theme to follow or just a photo we would like critique on? I've not been to something like this before so not exactly sure what type of images would be worthwile to submit or how many? Good question. Since this is the first one I was planning on keeping it pretty loose and open and we'll see what happens. It will be open to all types of photography. I think that if we continue these they will develop on their own and perhaps have themes or other things. When I've done critiques in the other classes I teach I provide a few guidelines, but keep in mind that this is just my own take on critiques. You can maybe bring an image(s) that are some of your best work and get everyone's reaction to it, perhaps to ready it for competition. You can also bring images that you want specific feedback on regarding lighting, posing, post-production, etc. Or perhaps you can bring images from a certain genre or micro-genre of photography that you want feedback on, such as getting ready shots at weddings, or senior photos. The other thing to keep in mind I think is that while bringing images that are representative of your best work is nice, we all may find it more valuable to bring images that are examples of things we need to work on. We're only as strong as our weakest link, so strengthening that weak link will make us better overall. I don't mean to dissuade anyone from bringing their best work to show off, but personally I get more out of a critique when I get help with a skill that I'm struggling with. It's not easy to put yourself at risk like that in front of others, but the benefits outweigh those risks I think.
