It's really a tell tale sign when the iconic film of the last 74 years is discontinued. Kodachrome was THE FILM that ushered in the era of modern photography. Before that was the hassle glass plates, long exposures, and much more. Photography was really really hard from it's advent in the 1860's until modern film (aka Kodachrome) in 1935. Not just hard, but the color image quality was pretty bad.
How many of the last centuries memorable iconic images were shot on Kodachrome? A ton! Remember the picture of the Afghan girl at the refugee camp in Pakistan, in the 80's - Kodachrome.
Not only was it beautiful film, but it's longevity was amazing. It was actually a black and white film in which the color dyes were added later in developing. This unique difference to ektachrome make it far more stable with an estimate archival life of over 100 years. No other color film or transparency came close.
So, it's time to say goodbye Kodachrome. At least you'll live on in Paul Simon's song... though, our kids won't have a clue that he's singing about.
